As part of activities marking Mental Health Awareness Month, Yasmeen Mental Oasis organized a meaningful mental health outreach program on 2nd May in Dungu, Tamale, engaging over 30 women in the beauty industry. The event created an open platform for education, awareness, and discussions surrounding mental health and emotional well-being.
Yasmeen Mental Oasis, founded by Yasmeen Abdala, is a growing mental health advocacy initiative dedicated to creating awareness, offering support, and promoting emotional well-being within communities. Inspired by her own mental health journey, Yasmeen Abdala continues to transform personal experiences into impactful advocacy and community outreach.
Participants benefited from insightful presentations delivered by mental health professionals including Mr. Peter Mintir Amadu, Clinical Psychologist at TOLECGH, and Mr. Neindoo Alhassan Ibrahima from the Ghana Health Service. They educated attendees on important mental health issues, emotional wellness, and the importance of seeking support when needed.
One of the most emotional moments came when Madam Memuna Ayibem Sadick shared her personal experience of trauma and losing her voice after surviving a motorcycle accident. Her story served as a powerful reminder about the importance of mental resilience, awareness, and community support.
Madam Humaima, Senior Manager of Informal Apprenticeship at Ghana TVET Service (Northern Region), also highlighted how vocational skills and handiwork can help reduce financial stress and positively contribute to mental well-being.
In addition, Hajia Halimatu Sagito encouraged participants to embrace self-awareness and avoid unhealthy comparisons and peer pressure, stressing that such pressures can negatively affect mental health.
The Assemblyman for the Dungu Electoral Area, Hon. Alhaji Abdul Rahama, expressed excitement about the initiative taking place within his community. He further encouraged Yasmeen Abdala to establish an office in the area to strengthen and expand mental health awareness and advocacy efforts.
The outreach served as a strong reminder that mental health matters and that community conversations like these are essential in breaking stigma, encouraging support, and promoting emotional wellness.
Let us continue to support one another, raise awareness, and keep the conversation on mental health alive.
